The Karl Burke-trained VENETIAN SUN (nap) is taken to reverse Moyglare placings with Precise, who nevertheless commands major respect despite a slight interruption in her training this spring. The selection brings the significant achievement of beating colts in the Morny to complete a notable summer hat-trick and, having prepped nicely with a racecourse gallop last month, there's a good chance that her progress will resume. My Highness (second pick) and Domina Ignis (third choice) are interesting, with striking resemblances to the 2014 and 2024 winners of this prize, while True Love helps to give Ballydoyle a strong hand. Several others have possibilities, as one would expect in a big-field Classic.[Steve Boow] Show less
Spotlight: Excellent progress last term culminated in Group 1 wins at the Curragh (7f, yielding) and Newmarket, bringing up a four-timer; drew clear inside the final 1f and comfortably beat Venetian Lace by just over 3l in the Fillies' Mile over C&D (good) on the final occasion; had a minor setback to her schedule with a slightly raised temperature in March but is apparently fine now; trainer has landed this race seven times; leading contender.
Spotlight: Absent since finishing third to Precise in the Moyglare Stud Stakes when upped to 7f at the Curragh, losing her unbeaten record but far from disgraced and sticking on in a manner that suggests she'll stay 1m this year; 4-4 previously and completed a notable 6f hat-trick with wins in Group 3 at Royal Ascot, Group 2 at Newmarket (July) and Group 1 at Deauville; may well rate higher still and add to an already impressive tally; pleased her trainer in a racecourse gallop last month; highly respected.
Spotlight: In the same ball park as stablemate Precise on ratings and, like that filly, is a Group 1 winner at Newmarket (Cheveley Park Stakes over 6f); landed the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot (5f) earlier in her 2yo campaign and added a Group 3 prize, with something to spare, at Leopardstown (7f, good to yielding) on reappearance; has a solid record aside from an excusable defeat at the Breeders' Cup; upped further in trip and has stamina on the dam's side; one of the main players.
Spotlight: Ended her 2yo campaign with quite a tidy success in Group 2 at Deauville (7f, good) to complete a hat-trick; beaten favourite (finished second, splitting outsiders) in the Prix Imprudence over the same C&D on reappearance but that was also the case with the same yard's Miss France, who rebounded to land this prize in 2014; likely to be suited by stepping up to 1m; enters calculations, with a resumption of improvement plausible.
Spotlight: Daughter of her connections' July Cup winner Starman; duly showed plenty of promise in both 2yo starts, recording a clearcut success at Nottingham (6f, good) and close second, clear of remainder, in the Rockfel at Newmarket (7f, good to firm; Group 2); gives the impression she'll be suited by this further step up in distance; possibilities with additional improvement on the cards.
Spotlight: Well-bred filly, by Frankel out of a 1m2f Group 1 scorer for her connections; quickened smartly and recorded an impressive 4l success in Kempton maiden (1m, AW) six months ago; the shortest on experience, being the sole once-raced contender, but brings major potential; interesting.
Spotlight: Newmarket form comprises a maiden win on the July course and third-place finish, just over 4l behind Precise, in the Group 1 Fillies' Mile; bagged Group 3 honours at Longchamp (1m, good) on reappearance, collaring a sitting duck (clear leader who tired) and strong at the finish; has evidently trained on well and her RPRs continue on an upward trajectory.
Spotlight: Solid 2yo form with two novice wins on the Newmarket July course and a good second in valuable conditions race at Longchamp (sole 1m attempt); didn't particularly boost her Guineas claims with 2l fourth to Asleet in the Nell Gwyn (7f, good) but she may take a step forward with that reappearance outing under her belt.
Spotlight: Gained her 2yo wins in stylish fashion and made a satisfactory reappearance as favourite for the Fred Darling at Newbury (7f, good; Group 3) when a close second under Saffie Osborne; bit to prove back at Newmarket, having looked ill at ease here in the Rockfel, but a plausible danger provided she handles the track better this time; from the family of 1,000 Guineas winner Ghanaati and retains potential.
Spotlight: Has something to find at this level but is open to further improvement and would be particularly interesting if the ground is on the soft side, having shown her 2yo promise on slower than good, namely a narrow success in newcomers' event at Deauville (7f) and a rallying fourth in the May Hill at Doncaster (1m Group 2).
Spotlight: From the family of Enable; edged ahead close home in C&D handicap (good; ran off a mark of 83) at the Craven meeting, adding to her 2yo AW wins; it's hard to knock an improving filly who remains unbeaten (3-3) but her form is a long way short of Classic standard, as BHA ratings reflect.
Spotlight: Very similar profile to the 2024 Guineas winner Elmalka, having won at Southwell in sole 2yo start then finished third in the Fred Darling (Group 3); gained her success (6f, AW) in emphatic fashion despite taking a good hold, then was beaten only 2l with hood fitted at Newbury (7f, good) despite being hampered; bred to stay 1m and looks open to further progress.
Spotlight: Held on gamely in 1m Listed event at Newcastle on seasonal debut, taking AW record to 2-2 and overall strike-rate to 4-6; may win more races at the right level but looks out of her depth in this company returned to turf, as her two defeats (both Group 2) attest.
Spotlight: Belied market position (rank outsider) by finishing second to Precise in the Group 1 Fillies' Mile over C&D but needs to prove she can back up that apparent improvement; may be flattered by her new rating and, combined with a record of 0-5 since debut success, doesn't look a solid contestant.
Spotlight: Belied her 50-1 odds with neck success in the Nell Gwyn (upped to 7f, good; Group 3) on seasonal debut, taking strike-rate to 3-8 and form figures on the Newmarket tracks to 121; doesn't look a budding star and only two fillies in the last 40 years have landed that trial then followed up in the 1,000 Guineas; may well come up short.
Spotlight: Frankel filly who has been campaigned exclusively over 7f at Newmarket, producing good performances (won maiden and second in Group 3) from the front last autumn and then not asked to lead when only sixth, beaten favourite, in the Nell Gwyn; may still have more to offer but this is a difficult task in terms of form and tactical considerations.
Spotlight: Proved a useful sprinter last season, notably winning over 5f at Glorious Goodwood in the summer and over 6f at Newmarket (beat Azleet in good-ground Listed contest) final outing; not an obvious 1,000 Guineas player, with doubts over the new trip and the deeper waters (she's a stone below the standard required).
Spotlight: Scored with something to spare at Southwell (AW) in sole 2yo start, then did well to finish sixth in the Fred Darling at Newbury (again over 7f) having been slowly away, met traffic issues and been forced to switch; remains a nice prospect for Tom Clover but this assignment demands another big leap forward on bare figures.
Spotlight: Career commenced with two wins, the second one on the Newmarket July course; record of 0-5 since reflects that her limitations are rather exposed, and this is a markedly stronger Guineas than the Jumeirah 1,000 Guineas in which she went close at Meydan (1m, good; Listed) last time.
